Hoosick Falls High School, along with high school choirs from across New York will perform with Tim Janis and his ensemble in a new special called Celebrate America, created by Janis to spotlight our nation’s youth and pull communities together in a celebration of music that uplifts and inspires.

Celebrate America, which airs on Saturday, March 20th at 5pm, was taped at WMHT Public Television in early October 2009. Busses rolled in from across the state, pulling together 500 students from New York high school music programs. Arriving well prepared and very professional, each choir was brought into the station to record their performance for the broadcast.

The Hoosick Falls High School students did an exceptional job singing “Wild Mountain Thyme.” Student Peter Donahue said, “So glad that I did this. It was so cool to see the studio and facilities. I hope that people watching will feel love for their country.” Student Meaghan DiMaggio said, “I think that is was a big deal to do this show. It was so great to be a part of this. I do hope that people watching us perform will feel a lot of pride.” Student Kara Gardner said, “It was so exciting to be here. I hope people watching us will feel love for our country.”

Not only does Celebrate America give our youth a life-changing opportunity, but it also teaches children the importance of contributing to community through the arts, as Celebrate America is also a fund raising event during Public Television’s annual pledge drives.

The following schools participated in Celebrate America at the WMHT Public Television station: Albany High School, Bethlehem Central High School, Hudson Falls Central High School, Canajoharie High School, Saratoga Springs High School, Amsterdam High School, Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake High School, South Glens Falls School, Glens Falls High School, Hoosick Falls High School, Kingston High School, Queensbury High School, and The Family Foundation.

“WMHT Public Television really put a lot of effort into creating this special. It takes a lot of ‘behind the scenes’ effort to bring this great opportunity for students together. I believe the fabric of our nation is the strength found in our local communities. We need to stay connected and committed with a spirit of serving one another to the best of our abilities.” Janis said.

Pre-Registration Info for H1N1 Vaccine

December 7th, 2009

RENSSELAER COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH

 December 4, 2009

Dear Parents/Guardians,

The Rensselaer County Department of Health has been working closely with your schools to prevent the spread of the H1N1 influenza virus.  Our original plan was to hold school-based clinics in each school district; however at this time there is still not enough H1N1 flu vaccine to meet the demand due to continued delays in production as reported by the federal Centers for Disease Control.

We anticipate having enough vaccine to hold four H1N1 vaccine clinics at various locations in Rensselaer County during the month of December.  These sites will provide free H1N1 vaccine to school- aged children between the ages of 5 and 18 years old. There is no cost for the H1N1 vaccine at these clinics. You are welcome to go to whichever clinic is most convenient to you.

Please note these H1N1 clinics could be canceled due to further delay in vaccine shipment.

You will need to pre-register your child for the clinic that you plan to attend, as there will be a limited amount of vaccine at each site.  The pre-registration number is 518-270-2626.

The clinics will be as follows:

Sunday, December 13th – 10 am to 4:30 pm at the Southern Rensselaer County Boys and Girls Club (Pre-register on Tuesday, December 8th and Wednesday, December 9th between 9 am and 3pm)

Tuesday, December 15th – 3:30 pm to 8pm at the Hoosic Valley Elementary School

(Pre-register on Thursday, December 10th between 9 am and 3 pm)

Saturday, December 19th – 10 am to 4:30 pm at the Columbia High School gymnasium

(Pre-register on Wednesday, December 16th and Thursday, December 17th between 9 am and 3 pm)

Rensselaer County Department of Health (RCDOH) has also been working closely with many physicians practicing in Rensselaer County to assure they have vaccine to provide to their patients. All pediatricians in Rensselaer County have received H1N1 vaccine from either NYSDOH or RCDOH, so if you are unable to attend any of the clinics listed above, please contact your child’s pediatrician regarding availability of the H1N1 vaccine.

We thank you for your patience and cooperation during this challenging time.

If you have any further concerns you can call the Rensselaer County Department of Health at 518-270-2655.

Sincerely,

Mary Fran Wachunas

Rensselaer County Department of Health

Hoosick Falls Central School is taking on Rachel’s Challenge

November 6th, 2009

Rachel Scott was the first student killed in the Columbine High School tragedy on April 20, 1999. Her acts of kindness and compassion, coupled with the contents of her six diaries, are the foundation of an anti-violence school program that will be coming to Hoosick Falls Central School on November 23, 2009.

Students in grades 5-12 in the Hoosick Falls Central School District will be attending a presentation called “Rachel’s Challenge.” While addressing the Columbine High School tragedy, Rachel’s Challenge delves into the concept of anti-bullying, the acceptance of others and compassion.

The goals of Rachel’s Challenge is to eliminate prejudice by looking for the best in others, dare to dream, choose your influences, kind words, and start a chain reaction with family and friends. “This program consists of an emotionally charged school assembly, a peer training session, and an evening community event that will inspire every listener towards a life of kindness and compassion. Your school will never be the same after experiencing Rachel’s Challenge, ” according to Rachel’s Challenge website at www.rachelschallenge.com.

On November 23, 2009, students in grades 9-12 will attend the presentation at 8:00 am and students in grades 5-8 will attend the presentation at 9:30 am.
